Vocational Skills

Employability skills are evaluated and enhanced through group and individual sessions. The focus of each session is to help each participant in securing and maintaining employment.

The course material consists of guest speakers, lectures, reference material, experiential interactive processes, and discussion. The topics such as goal setting, problem-solving, interviewing, conflict resolution, etc. are used as a guide in developing self-confidence and the ability in each participant to function within an organization. Program services regarding employment include individual counseling and assessment of work skills and employment history.

We focus on three fundamental areas: Literacy, Employment, and Self-Sufficiency

Literacy

Financial Literacy
A working and implementable plan to obtain and manage personal finances is vitally important to a family’s survival and success.  For employers, a financially healthy employee will be more productive which ultimately saves the employer money. It doesn’t take an accountant to understand and manage personal finances, just accurate information in an implementable plan that you can understand. Our mission is to equip individuals within our service area with the necessary tools to become more effective in combating economic disparities as it relates to affordable housing, transportation, medical care, and overall financial stability.

Our workshop is divided into 3 phases: Basic Financial Knowledge & Terminology, Budgeting & Tracking Expenses, and Understanding Credit; each presented in a weekly format on a monthly schedule. The goal is to teach an individual what affects their paycheck in real terms, and that knowledge will aid them in being better able to make financially responsible decisions.

Computer Literacy
This program was developed to address the overwhelming need for computer-based education within low-income communities.  Computers are mainstream in our everyday lives and vital to education, employment, communication, finance management and social contact. Computer literacy, the ability to use computers and related technology efficiently is a very important skill to possess in our society.  Employers have started to utilize computers in every aspect of employment management from the application process to the carrying out of daily job skills.

Our workshop will focus on Basic Computer Skills, Computer Vocabulary, Opening and Saving Files, Internet Usage, Faxing and Scanning Documents and Microsoft based programs. It is offered in a weekly format on a monthly schedule with weekday and weekend class availability.

Employment

Direct Service Worker Training
A Direct Service Worker is an unlicensed person who provides personal care of other services and supports to persons with disabilities or to the elderly to enhance their well-being, and who is involved in face to face direct contact with the person and is compensated through state or federal funds. Direct Service Worker functions may include, but are not limited to: assistance and training, activities of daily living, personal care services, and job-related supports. Direct Service Workers are employed by Personal Care Agencies who are direct State Licensed Providers.

In Region 2 alone, there are 82 licensed Personal Care Agency Providers who employ well over 60-80 Direct Service Workers respectively.  Most of whom had minimal experience in a heath care related field prior to employment, live at or below the poverty income level.

Our intent is to provide an opportunity for Direct Service Workers to be independently certified of their employer affording them to be available to more employment assignments and more broadly educated in their field of work, thus being self-sufficient. In addition, the cost associated with obtaining this state mandated certification often exceeds their financial resources and results in an employee having to commit to employment for a period of time despite his/her inability to complete tasks effectively and safely according to regulatory standards. We purpose to provide this training and certification at no cost to a minimum of 100 individuals totaling $6,500.00 utilizing direct implementation of the curriculum provided by LDH-Health Standards Section in addition to nationally accredited video-based training on standard healthcare practices.

Self-Sufficiency

Prison Reform Services

One of the missions of Kingdom of Heaven Ministries is to help the ex-offender reintegrate back into society. The increasing volume of returning prisoners, the multiple challenges they face, and their high recidivism rates have dire consequences for public safety, as well as state budgets. These impacts expose high stakes of reentry, and opportunities to improve both safety and reintegration over the coming years.
We aim to assist in their job search process upon release from prison, while collaborating with the prison system to implement training inside prison along with providing job search assistance while young men are still within prison walls. We will also take the initiative to assist with the following: search for housing, employment, treatment, health care, and day to day living responsibilities.
